The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular natural treasures. Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, Udzungwa combines lush rainforest, rugged peaks, dramatic waterfalls, uncommon wildlife (especially primates), and a deeply serene rarely-crowded atmosphere. Recommended Preparation

  • Good physical fitness; ability to hike on uneven, sometimes muddy, forested terrain
  • Gear: sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, layered warm clothing (higher altitudes can get cold), insect repellent, sun protection, water bottle, flashlight/headlamp etc.
  • Acclimatization: although altitude is not quite as high as Kilimanjaro, weather and temperature changes can be significant.
  • Health precautions: malaria prophylaxis, vaccinations, etc., depending on the route and season

  • Animals: Aside from primates, one may encounter elephants, duikers, bushbucks, civets, small mammals; larger mammals are less common but possible.
